Top Hops Beer Shop Opens

Top Hops Beer Shop:
Merchants and Advocates of Great Beer
Part Bottle Shop, Part Tasting Room, Part Classroom

New York, NY [January 19, 2012] - Top Hops Beer Shop is now open at 94 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. A retail store and tasting bar designed to showcase great beer from around the world, Top Hops offers a selection upwards of 700 brands, both American craft and import, available for purchase and on-premise imbibing.

Top Hops encourages people who are passionate about beer to come together to share their enthusiasm and gain a better understanding of the magic that is hops, yeast, barley and water. And to make Top Hops a true hub for dynamic beer experiences, Top Hops will host guest brewers, visiting beer writers and beer pairing seminars.

Don't know a Double IPA from a Dopplebock, or Saaz hops from the American Cascade variety? Not to worry, Top Hops welcomes beer drinkers of all knowledge levels, from the geek to the novice. Owner Ted Kenny has created a welcoming, unpretentious environment that encourages experimentation and -- most importantly -- fun. "It's beer, after all," says Kenny. "Hopefully we will introduce our customers to beers or styles they have never heard of or tried before."

Serious beer drinkers, however, are in for a treat. A 30-foot custom-built wood and polished aluminum bar invites customers to belly up and enjoy a tasting flight or a glass of any of the 20 beers on tap, as well as any bottle available in the store. Five of the 20 taps are dedicated to regional breweries including Greenport [Long Island], Kelso [Brooklyn], Captain Lawrence [Westchester, NY], Troegs [Hershey, PA] and River Horse [Lambertville, NJ]. Rotating taps will feature seasonal beers, limited editions and other hard to find selections, both domestic and imported. Growlers are available in 64-oz and 32-oz sizes for take home.

Never one to discriminate, Kenny has dedicated a tap line to Budweiser. "When served properly and stored and treated the way the brewer intended, Bud is in fact a good example of its style of beer, American Lager," explains Kenny. "Most places don't treat it properly, which is the issue."

Here's a fact that will make beer geeks smile, and give everyone the chance to taste the beers as they were meant to be tasted: Top Hops cleans their own draft lines and never goes longer than two weeks between cleanings. They are fanatic about clean draft lines. A blackboard behind the bars lists the date that each line was cleaned along with other pertinent details, including the date the keg was tapped, IBU, style, brewery, brewery location, and a description of the beer.

The bottle selection consists of nearly 700 brands and spans the globe with unparalleled breadth and depth. Top Hops works tirelessly to offer an unprecedented selection, with possibly the best selection of Belgian beers in New York City, including DeuS, Glaven Toren Saison and Contreras. Approximately half the inventory is dedicated to American craft beers, including offerings from cult gypsy brewers like Brian Stillwater of Stillwater Artisanal Ales.

A small menu of beer-friendly items is available, including a rotating selection of cheeses, charcuterie, olives, Mast Brothers chocolate and German-style pretzels, all sourced from The Essex Street Market around the corner. A small selection of wines by the glass, as well as non-alcoholic beverages, are also available for non-beer drinkers.

A native New Yorker, Ted Kenny spent 12 years in finance before seeing the light and moving to the beer business in 2006. He worked for the Anheuser-Busch/In Bev brewery and then distributor, learning something every day about beer. Kenny is a Certified Beer Server from the Cicerone Certification Program and is on his way to becoming a Certified Cicerone. Similar to the process of becoming a Master Sommelier, a Certified Cicerone undergoes an exam that demonstrates a vast knowledge of beer, from its history, its different styles and how to pair them with food, as well as a working knowledge of draft beer equipment and proper storage.

All Top Hops employees are required to become Certified Beer Servers. This commitment to knowledge and education is paramount to Kenny, "What's the point of offering 700 beers if my staff can't answer questions about them or pour them in the correct glass?"

Architect Russell Glover has created an inviting space using a palette of concrete, wood and aluminum - all the materials commonly found in a brewery. The heart and soul of the store are the two 26-foot long glass refrigerators that hold the cold bottles (organized by place of origin) and kegs that hug the right and left walls of the store, underneath an arched white-washed ceiling designed to look and feel like a beer cave.

Sunoco Expands Craft Beer Exchange Program

Last month we profiled Sunoco's Craft Beer Exchange Program in our year end spotlight. Local brewers have identified grocery and convenience stores as the next big area for growth. Well, Sunoco just announced that they are expanding the program to an additional 14 stores bringing the total number of A+ Plus stores with the program to 40.
The program started in Buffalo and moved east towards Rochester and Cortland, but this new expansion has gone even further by brining stores to Albany. Over the holidays I was able to visit one of the locations in Rochester and came away impressed.

Below is a Google map of all of the Sunoco locations that currently have Craft Beer Exchange programs.

*Editor's Note: There are 40 locations on the Craft Beer Exchange website but only 39 on our map.  For whateve reason, Google Maps could not find the location listed at 8000 Main & Transit, Williamsville, NY 14221.

Greenport Harbor To Expand

GREENPORT HARBOR BREWING IS EXPANDING:
Purchasing Lucas Ford Dealership in Southold

Keeping Tasting Room in Greenport

Greenport, NY. In order to make room for additional production capacity and ultimately the bottling of its beer, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company announced that it is now in contract on the Lucas Ford dealership in the Hamlet of Peconic, Southold Town.

There are, however, no plans to leave Greenport.

"Our heart and soul will always be in Greenport", said Richard Vandenburgh who co-founded the Brewery with his best friend, John Liegey. "We will maintain the tasting room on Carpenter Street and use the production space for an apprenticeship program. We want to give those interested in breaking into the business an opportunity to learn."

The Lucas Ford property not only provides room for increased operations, but land to cultivate and explore local grown crops solidifying the North Fork as a local beer destination. Once completed, it will also hold a tasting room with indoor and outdoor seating.

Greenport Harbor Brewery plans to close on the new property in spring of 2012 and be up-and-running in January of 2013. The new facility, with its 25,000 barrel brew house system, will quadruple production and double its workforce in 24 months.

The Good Beer Seal Inducts 2011 Class

Any fan of craft beer in New York City has probably seen the "Good Beer Seal" sticker.  On Tuesday June 14th, seven beer bars were inducted to the 2011 Class of The Good Beer Seal.  The following bars were honored:

4th Avenue Pub (76 4th Ave., at Bergen St., Boerum Hill)
Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope)
Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint)
The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace)

The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay)
Waterfront Ale House (540 2nd Ave., at 30th St., Kips Bay)

The Seal is given to bars that serve "good beer" and was developed when Garry Gillis of the Burp Castle and Standings, Ray Deter of DBA and DBA Williamsburg, and Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 joined together in attempt to certify bars that served good beer.

According to the Good Beer Seal website, there are five criteria for receiving a Good Beer Seal.

1) Have 80% craft domestic or special imported beers
2) Serve a good portion of their beers via a draft beer and/or cask ale program
3) Maintain a strong “Pub” vibe as a nice, local place to drink a beer and visit with friends
4) Active community presence, as well as being an independently operated establishment

Beer Festival Heads to the Meadowlands

First-Ever International Beer Festival To Be Held at Meadowlands Expo Center-Feb 5

SECAUCUS, NJ. December 15, 2010 - The biggest names in international brewing will gather at the Meadowlands Exposition Center at Harmon Meadows in Secaucus, NJ on Saturday, February 5, 2011 for the Expos first-ever international beer festival. This international beer tasting extravaganza will showcase more than 50 breweries from across the globe, each providing samples of their country's proudest brewing achievement. Shoulder to shoulder with some of America's best breweries will be amazing beer from Scotland, Japan, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Colombia, Peru, and others.

The event offers beer enthusiasts a unique pay-one-price opportunity to try some foreign beers from foreign lands. "Based on the success of our International Great Beer Expos held in New York and Philadelphia, adding New Jersey was a natural addition to our beer event portfolio," said event producer, Andy Calimano of Starfish Junction Productions. "We have a great reputation in the craft beer and import markets. We help breweries and importers reach new customers and we offer beer lovers a fun opportunity to learn about and try new beers," he added.

In his recent Beverage Dynamics (March 2010) article titled "Import Status", Michael Sherer reports that image alone isn't enough to get consumers to trade up to imports. He states that
"brand traits like heritage, authenticity, unique ingredients, and taste can differentiate them and give consumers reasons to discover them." With the launch of this new International Great Beer Expo, "we hope to lead beer lovers from New Jersey on a fantastic trans-continental journey," added Mr. Calimano.

The International Great Beer Expo (www.GreatBeerExpo.com) will have two sessions: 12-4:00 pm and 5:30-9:00 pm. A limited number of tickets will be sold. Once the event sells out, no additional tickets will be available for purchase. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased at the event website www.GreatBeerExpo.com/Meadowlands. Tickets include admission to the Expo, admission to special beer seminars, a souvenir tasting glass, and the freedom to enjoy a 2 oz. sample of any of the beers present at the Expo. Designated driver tickets are also available for $10 each. No one, including designated drivers, under 21 will be admitted and photo ID is required for entry. The Meadowlands Exposition Center at Harmon Meadow is located at 355 Plaza Drive, Secaucus, New Jersey 07095.

The secure "CLICK AND PRINT" ticketing at the event website (www.GreatBeerExpo.com/Meadowlands) makes a ticket to this event a fantastic last-minute gift idea. Buy the ticket at the event website then immediately print the ticket from a home computer. A wonderful reward for the last minute Christmas shopper.

This event will raise funds for the Beer For Brains Foundation, a national organization dedicated to bringing awareness of and offering hope to those afflicted with brain cancer. The event is sponsored in part by NJBeerEvents.com. The event is produced by Starfish Junction, co-producer of the Philly Craft Beer Fest (www.PhillyCraftBeerFest.com), named one of the "Top 10 Beer Festivals in America" by Forbes Traveler.

Total Tap Takeover on November 30th Includes 40 Drafts & 4 Casks Ranging From Classic Sierra Nevada Favorites to Numerous Rare, Never-Before-Released Beers

NEW YORK, Nov. 19, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Rattle N Hum Bar & Kitchen, NYC's foremost craft beer and food destination (14 East 33rd Street; 212-481-1586), announced today that it has been "tapped" as the East Coast venue for Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.'s 30th Anniversary celebration. It was back in November 1980 that the first-ever batch of beer made it through the Sierra Nevada brewhouse, ushering-in a new era of interesting, hand-crafted and flavorful beer. Some of the founding Sierra Nevada pioneers and other members of the Sierra Nevada family will be making the eastward trek to Rattle N Hum for this historic occasion.

The festivities kick-off at Rattle N Hum on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 4 p.m. and include a total tap takeover with 40 Sierra Nevada beers on tap, as well as 4 rare casks and numerous special bottled offerings. These exceedingly rare beers include Hellraiser—a Chocolate Chili Imperial Stout, Barrel-Aged Life & Limb -- a collaboration beer with Dogfish Head Brewery, Hopsichord, Almond Marzen Project and four of the special one-off 30th Anniversary Beers. Check out the full list of beers that will be poured at the event here.

"Beerituality" Screening at The Burp Castle

On Sunday, November 7th, The Burp Castle will be hosting a special screening of "Beerituality". The film is produced by FAD Productions and centers around a bar's attempt to circumvent a new mayor's ban on alcohol. The screening will start at 3 pm and is free to attend, and the bar will operate as a cash bar. The event is open to anyone 21 and over.

The Burp Castle is located at 41 East 7th St., New York, NY.

http://burpcastlenyc.wordpress.com/

About Beerituality:

In the town of Brewster, few places are as popular as the Abbey Normal beer bar--at least until the country's most infamous anti-alcohol zealots, Reverend Jimmy Patrick arrives. The prohibitionist preacher maneuvers his way into the mayor's chair and wastes no time in launching a referendum to ban all alcohol. The charismatic holy roller manages to eke out narrow passage of the referendum, thus putting Abbey Normal out of business. However, the pub's owners find a loophole in the local ordinance--a special allowance for alcohol served during religious services--and cleverly transform the bar into St. Abbey the Normal, The Church of Beer.

Landmark Beer Changes Brewers

A few weeks ago, we wrote about Flying Bison's financial troubles and F.X. Matt's proposal to buy the Buffalo brewery. While The Buffalo News reported that the deal was not final, it seems as if the deal is either completed or will be completed soon. In addition to brewing their own beer, Flying Bison also brewed beer for the Landmark Beer Company. Deal or No Deal (Howie Mandel?) it seems as if the Syracuse based Landmark Company is not waiting around. has stated that the brewery has found a new brewer to make their beer.

In a blog posted on Friday, Landmark Owner Kiernan states that Landmark has: "decided to move our production to another brewery. That brewery would be the Paper City Brewing Company in Holyoke Massachusetts."

Kiernan also states that Landmark will be bringing back their Landmark India Style Red Ale as well as tweaking their IPA recipe. The Red Ale will be out in bottles and on draft by Mid-March and the IPA will be dryer, with more hops and a lighter color. Landmark also had Custom Brewcrafters brew an oak aged imperial stout that will be called Black Steel and will be available the first week in March.

You can read Landmark's post here.

About John Forté:

John Forté is a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer from Brooklyn, New York, best known for his work with the multi-platinum group “The Fugees.” On November 24, 2008, Forté was granted a commutation by President George W. Bush after having served more than seven years of a fourteen-year federal prison sentence for a first-time non-violent drug
offense. Those who campaigned on his behalf include famed singer/songwriter Carly Simon and Senator Orrin Hatch (R) of Utah.

This July, marking the nine-year anniversary of the date of his arrest, Forté released StyleFREE the EP, his first collection of new music in eight years. Forté’s undeniable talent as a lyricist and musician, far from diminishing during his incarceration, has grown and matured. His new songs, full of powerful social commentary combined with hope and inspiration, bear witness to the remaking of a man and his struggle to remain free – they are a testament to his spiritual journey and proof that the phoenix can, and will, rise from the ashes.

Fire Island Beer Company Unveils Fire Island Red Wagon IPA

OCEAN BEACH, N.Y. - Fire Island Beer Company is proud to announce the launch of their second craft beer, Fire Island Red Wagon IPA. This India Pale Ale follows the company’s successful flagship beer, Fire Island Lighthouse Ale, which was introduced in May and continues to sell at a brisk pace.

Fire Island Red Wagon IPA will join Fire Island Beer Company’s lineup on November 1 and will be available on Long Island, in New York City and Westchester and Rockland counties. Red Wagon is the next step in bringing to life several unique craft beer styles inspired by the experience of Fire Island.

Fire Island Red Wagon IPA is the handiwork of two brothers and a cousin who developed their taste for craft beer and home brewing during the summers they spent on Fire Island, the naturally beautiful and very colorful barrier island just off Long Island’s south shore. The ultra-relaxed island has attracted families, partiers, weekend beach-goers and outdoor sports lovers for generations, yet it refuses to allow cars, pretension and the frantic pace common to NY-metro area culture. This led the Fire Island Beer Company founders to coin it “The Other New York," a concept they find very refreshing.

“Fire Island Beer Company is going in a hoppier direction with Red Wagon IPA compared to our Lighthouse Ale,” says Co-founder and Head Beer Maestro Tom Fernandez. “We wanted to create a smooth-bodied golden beer that blends the right amount of floral and fruity hops and finishes with a crisp taste. I think we’ve accomplished that with Red Wagon IPA.” It's big on flavor and big on substance, or as its brewers like to say, "an IPA as grounded as the people who drink it."

“Wagons are central to life on Fire Island, and the perfect symbol of what makes this place so different,” says Co-founder Jeff Glassman. “There are no cars, so people pull their stuff around in wagons instead. It’s a great reminder to keep things simple in life ... you can only carry so much, so focus on what’s important. That is the idea that inspired Red Wagon IPA”

“Just like Lighthouse Ale, an early homebrew version of Red Wagon IPA was conceived and tested at the Shack, a casual lunch counter and bar between the bay and ocean in Atlantique Beach on Fire Island where we worked summers when we were younger,” Fernandez adds. “It didn’t matter if you were a local, a surfer, a fisherman or a weekender … everybody gathered there and shared stories and laughs over a few beers. It was full of really easygoing people with a ton of character, just like Fire Island itself, so the vibe there was awesome. All of our beers have been inspired in some way by this vibe and the Shack was a great venue to sample people on our early brews.”

What started as a basement home brewing experiment has grown into meticulously crafted and well-received beers. Fire Island Beer Company did not want to risk the integrity of their recipes in order to share them with a wider audience, so the craft brewers enlisted some expert industry help from the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company (www.oldesaratogabrew.com) to bring their recipes to life.

"Olde Saratoga has always supported the spirit of craft brewing,” said Paul McErlean, Head Brewer at Olde Saratoga Brewing Company. “When Fire Island came to us it was an exciting opportunity because we've never worked with a true home brew recipe before."

Red Wagon IPA will leverage Fire Island Beer Company’s existing relationship with distribution heavyweight Manhattan Beer Distributors (www.manhattanbeer.com). As the largest single market beer distributor in the U.S., Manhattan’s Craft and Micro Division will be responsible for selling the new brand into target on- and off-premises accounts.

To help create a unique look and feel for Red Wagon IPA, Fire Island Beer Company turned to local branding and design boutique rocketdog (www.rocketdognyc.com). The innovative branding features original artwork and copy that will anchor all packaging, point of sale materials and digital applications for the beer company and its brands. One way the brand will share its spirit is through the use of four separate "stories" that can be found randomly on the rear labels of Red Wagon IPA. Each will communicate something different about The Other New York and the mindset found there. For example:

“When you come to Fire Island, instead of taxis to greet you, there are red wagons. So, you kinda have to learn to live with what you can pull or toss over your shoulder. Some clean clothes. Groceries. A toothbrush. Definitely a six-pack (or two) of Red Wagon IPA. If you think about it, it’s a good measure in life. To see what stuff is important. And what’s just stuff.”

“When we started Fire Island Beer Company, we set out with one mission: To create world-class craft beers that are inspired by the color, character and delicious experience of Fire Island. With Red Wagon IPA, we've taken the next big step in realizing that mission and are really seeing it all come together,” Glassman said. “We are all about good times and great beer.”

Fire Island Red Wagon IPA and Fire Island Lighthouse Ale are both available in single 12-ounce bottles, 6-packs, 5.16-gallon kegs and 15.5-gallon kegs and are available to ship immediately.
