Brooklyn Brew Shop and Brooklyn Brewery Release Collaboration Beer Making Kit

Autumn Launch of New Beer Making Kit Will Allow Craft Beer Fans to
Brew Brooklyn Brewery’s Sorachi Ace at Home

Brooklyn, NY (August 12, 2015) – Brooklyn Brew Shop’s Erica Shea and Stephen Valand, in partnership with brewmaster Garrett Oliver of New York’s renowned Brooklyn Brewery, are thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of a new Sorachi Ace collaboration Beer Making Kit. The beautifully designed and user-friendly brew kit will bring a scaled-down version of Brooklyn Brewery’s delicious Belgian farmhouse-style saison Sorachi Ace (7.2% ABV) to stovetops around the world.
The collaboration will launch with both a reusable beer making kit, which comes with everything one needs to make a gallon of Sorachi Ace, along with an ingredient mix for more seasoned brewers. Full beer kits will retail for $40, and ingredient mixes will be priced at $15.  The products will make their US debut on Friday, September 18, 2015 on Brooklyn Brew Shop’s website, at the Brooklyn Brewery tasting room and in major retailers across the country, including Whole Foods and Total Wine & More; International markets will follow. For a full list of stockists, please visit brooklynbrewshop.com.

Named after the Sorachi region of Hokkaido, Japan, the Sorachi Ace hop was developed by a large Japanese brewery in the late 1970s. A cross between British Brewers Gold, Japanese “Beikei No. 2” and the famed Czech Saaz, it had a unique lemony, herbal scent, but this hop was deemed "odd" and ended up quickly banished to a laboratory.  It lingered there until 2008, when the Sorachi Ace hop was quietly revived by a family in Washington State.

Less than a year later, brewmaster Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery made it the star of his own titular beer. Originally a member of their limited Brewmaster’s Reserve series, Brooklyn Sorachi Ace is a classic saison, an unfiltered golden farmhouse ale, with a clean malt flavor and the quirky Sorachi Ace hop standing front and center. Dry-hopping releases Sorachi Ace’s unique combination of citrus and dill-like aromatics to tickle the nose before ascending into a fine harmony between German 2-row pilsner malt and playful Belgian ale yeast.

Shea and Valand of Brooklyn Brew Shop have been fans of Sorachi Ace since its inception, and look forward to teaching brewers in the United States and beyond to craft the unique beer at home.

Stephen Valand and Erica Shea of Brooklyn Brew Shop said, “We couldn’t have hoped for a more natural partnership than with our neighbors and longtime friends at Brooklyn Brewery. We love their history and devotion to the borough, and are always amazed by how they manage to stay one step ahead of the curve and give back to the community in the process. We’re excited to help bring thousands of batches of Sorachi Ace to life in kitchens around the globe.”

“I initially launched Sorachi Ace as a limited edition Brewmaster’s Reserve–we couldn’t part with it after a few months, and it became a permanent part of our roster at Brooklyn Brewery. Now, with the launch of Brooklyn Brew Shop’s Sorachi Ace beer making kit, one of my favorite beers is poised to have an even richer life,” said Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster, This kit will give both seasoned brewers and beginners the opportunity to deconstruct one of our favorite creations and understand what really makes it tick.

Citi Field Set To Host Bacon and Beer Classic

NEW YORK – Move over baseball…make way for two other American classics as bacon and beer take center stage at the home of the New York Mets this summer. What could be more American than beer and bacon at the ball park?

Cannonball Productions brings the Bacon and Beer Classic (baconandbeerclassic.com) to Citi Field for a unique doubleheader on July 26The Brunch session runs from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., followed by an Evening session from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fans can attend one – or both – but need a ticket for each session. VIP ticket-holders will be admitted one hour earlier…an extra hour of beer and bacon!

A one-of-a-kind event, the Bacon and Beer Classic at Citi Field is part of a national series of events hosted by major league baseball stadiums across the country. Fans can get a taste of history as they walk through the stadium sampling craft beers and special bacon-inspired treats prepared by local chefs. There’ll also be live music to dance to, interactive games to bring out the inner kid in all, and plenty of cooking demonstrations and beer schools where everyone – from expert to novice – will learn a thing or two about bacon and beer.

“This certainly won’t be a run-of-the-mill experience for guests. The Bacon and Beer Classic brings together the best in local food, brews, and entertainment,” says Cannonball Productions and Bacon and Beer Classic founder Kate Levenstien. “Because New Yorkers are such die-hard sports fans and so knowledgeable about craft beer and gourmet food, we’re thrilled to be hosting our next event at Citi Field in July.”

The starting lineup for New York’s event is strong, and continues to grow. Already, more than 80 area restaurants and breweries have signed on, with each brewery serving at least two of its most celebrated brews. Restaurant chefs are being challenged to prepare their most delectable bacon-inspired dishes. Attendees can expect to taste several bacon classics and bacon creations they've never seen (or tasted) before.

To keep track of all the tasty treats, guests can download a mobile application that not only lets them vote for their favorites, but provides useful, interactive features for use during the event. After each session, votes will be tabulated and awards presented to restaurants and breweries.

Cannonball Productions ensures the experience is local by partnering with businesses and groups that provide the best the area has to offer, including D’Artagnan, its gourmet bacon provider. The event’s charity partner is Citymeals-on-Wheels (citymeals.org) which unites volunteers from the Greater New York City area. Citymeals-on-Wheels provides a continuous lifeline of nutritious food and human company to New York’s homebound elderly, last year delivering two million weekend, holiday and emergency meals to 18,000 frail and aged residents.

The Bacon and Beer Classic is an all-inclusive event, with guest receiving a souvenir Bacon and Beer Classic cup.  General admission tickets are $59 each. VIP experience tickets are available and provide access to a variety of exclusive privileges, including, but not limited to: one hour-early entrance, access to VIP areas on the warning track and inside the dugouts, and exclusive brew tastings.

Brewers Association Releases Top 50 Breweries of 2012 - The New York Spin

Earlier today, the Brewers Association released their annual list of the Top 50 Breweries of 2012.  The list is based solely on the production statistics, i.e. who produces the most beer.

The full list is broken into two categories; the list of Top 50 U.S. Craft Brewing Companies and the list of the Top 50 Overall U.S. Brewing Companies.  F.X. Matt Brewing, Brooklyn Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, and Southern Tier Brewing Company were the four representatives from New York State on both lists.  North American Breweries made an appearance on the overall list but was excluded from the craft brewing list.  Below are our thoughts on each list.

Craft Brewing Companies List
F.X. Matt Brewing was the highest at #8 followed by Brooklyn Brewery at #11, Blue Point Brewing Company at #36, and Southern Tier Brewing Company at #37.

*F.X. Matt is not only the oldest brewery in NY but also the biggest.  In addition to their wildly popular Saranac line, they also produce the historic Utica Club line as well as contract brew for Flying Bison (Buffalo).  Saranac has become almost as easy to find across the country as Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada.

*Brooklyn Brewery's new expansion has allowed them to climb the ladder.  In addition to producing award winning beers, head brewer Garret Oliver has become the country's foremost expert on craft beer.  Brooklyn brews great beer and has a great distribution network set up, but you would have to imagine that Oliver helps as well.

*Southern Tier has also been continuously expanding their brewing capacity.  Everyone has always enjoyed their 22 ounce bottle line, but they have made a move in recent years to put great beers in 12 ounce bottles.  It is rare that I have a bad beer from Southern Tier so it makes sense that the rest of the country feels the same way.  I have a feeling they will continue to climb this list each year.

Overall List
The addition of the big boys bumped each of the four New York craft breweries down but also brought about the inclusion of a fifth NY member.  North American Breweries was listed at #6, Matt Brewing Company is next at #15, followed by Brooklyn Brewery at #18, Blue Point Brewing Company at #47, and Southern Tier Brewing Company at #48.

*North American Breweries is the parent company the brews for several beer brands/lines.  This list included the production numbers for the Dundee, Genesee, Labatt Lime, Magic Hat and Pyramid brands.  The whole portfolio and infrastructure has been sold multiple times over the last few years and is currently up for sale again.  None of the other big brewers are allowed to purchase it because of anti-trust laws, but current owner KPS Capital seems to have reached a $388 million deal with Cerveceria Costa Rica.

*It really does not matter to me who owns the Dundee and Genesee lines as long as the owner gives them the time, money and respect they deserve.  KPS did a flat out wonderful job with the Genesee brand.  They revived the historic sign, built a museum and brewpub and made numerous other countless moves to help revive the brand.  Let's hope that Cerveceria continues the momentum that KPS built.

*Blue Point has always been one of the biggest craft brewers in New York but I was surprised to see it on the Top 50 overall list.  Their beer is everywhere in New York but it just did not seem to be as widely as distributed as other breweries on the same list.  You learn something new everyday.  Congrats to Blue Point as well as the other breweries representing New York on the lists.

Mayor Bloomberg To Cut The Ribbon For The Local Expansion Of The Brooklyn Brewery

BROOKLYN, NY (Feb 2011) - New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will cut the ribbon to inaugurate the local expansion of The Brooklyn Brewery on Monday, Feb 14, at 10am.

The mayor will join brewery President Steve Hindy, Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and partners Robin and Eric Ottaway at the 79 North 11th St brewery in the Williamsburg neighborhood. Also attending will be Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Joe Lentol, state Senator Daniel Squadron and Peter Davidson of the Empire State Development Corp.

The $8 million expansion will increase the capacity of the Brooklyn brewery from 12,000 barrels a year (1 barrel = 14 cases of beer) to 120,000 barrels. Last year, the brewery sold 108,000 barrels of beer, most of it produced under contract at the Matt Brewery in Utica, NY.

"The expansion of our Brooklyn brewery means that most of our growth in the next three years will be in Brooklyn," said Hindy. "We expect to double our sales in the next three years."

The brewery grew by 20% in 2010 in spite of capacity limitations.

The Empire State Development Corp. gave the brewery an $800,000 grant for the project from the Downstate Revitalization Fund, which is aimed at spurring development and job creation in New York.

The Brooklyn Brewery was started in 1988 by Hindy, a former Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, and his Brooklyn neighbor, Tom Potter, a former banker. Potter retired from the business in 2004, and he now is starting a distillery in Brooklyn, the New York Distilling Co.

Craft brewers like Brooklyn Brewery are growing rapidly at a time when overall beer consumption in the United States is falling. In 2009, beer consumption declined by 2.5% and in 2010 by 2%. Craft beer grew by 10% in both of those years. The Brooklyn Brewery grew by 20% in those years.

The Brooklyn Brewery searched unsuccessfully for more space to expand its Brooklyn operations over the past five years. "It wasn't until the economy tanked that we were able to negotiate a lease that we could live with," said Hindy. In the end, the brewery acquired space directly adjacent to the brewing facility they opened in 1996.

The expansion also will allow for tours and special events on weekdays. Previously, the only public hours were Friday 6-11pm, Saturdays noon-8pm and Sundays noon-6pm.

Draft Magazines 25 Best Beers of 2009

Draft Magazine has recently released their list of the 25 Best Beers of 2009. The list appears in the January-February 2010 issue and two of New York's finest have made the cut.

Draft says: "We tasted more than a thousand beers this year--some fresh from the tank, others from centuries-old recipes--and crowned the top 25 that blew us away in 2009, either for the first time or the hundredth. Some are multi-medal award winners, others have captured the imagination of bloggers and beer geeks and still others have sat quietly, awaiting their moment of glory. Here it is."

Brooklyn Brewery's Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse

Captain Lawrence's Cuvee de Castleton

Editor's Thoughts: Draft gives no specific criteria, nor does it give a numeric rank so it is hard to argue with any of their selections. The Brooklyn beer is very good and we have heard the same about Cuvee de Castleton. It seems that people love these "Best Of" lists and it looks like Draft has put together a nice one. It is hard to overlook the fact that the incorrect spelling of Brooklyner though, especially with the spelling appearing on the bottle, which Draft features on the very next page.

AOL Says Brooklyn Brewery Has The Best Beer in NYC

AOL City Guide recently nominated a list of places for their best of beer in the category of best nightlife for New York. Brooklyn Brewery was the winner, but the list also included some of New York's best beer bars such as dba, The Ginger Man and Spuyten Duyvil.

While I will agree that Brooklyn is definatly a place to go to for great beer while in New York, I have a hard time believing that it is the best. I would much rather go to a beer bar where I can be offered more then one brand of beer. It is nice to see that craft beer is getting more and more press with each passing day. Cheers to AOL!

Brooklyn Brewery is Having Trouble Expanding

Brooklyn Brewery has run into some roadblocks on their way to a new facility. Twelve years ago, the company moved into their current residence on North 11th Street. At that time, the community was nowhere near the emerging hot spot it is now. The beer makers were hailed as pioneers but now that success has come back in a twist of irony. Brooklyn is currently looking for a new building to expand operations but are having trouble finding a suitable location. The company is looking to spend $15 million on a new building that would include a beer garden, which would most likely make Brooklyn a top destination for craft beer lovers across the country. The main problem is the lack of manufacturing space available in area. The majority of property owners in Brooklyn that have properties suitable for manufacturing are holding onto the hopes that re-zoning will make the property eligible for residential, which has a much higher profit margin. The beer company has been outsourcing some of its production to Utica, where the F.X. Matt Brewing Company (makers of Saranac) have been bottling Brooklyn beer. Hindy says that a new facility would help him double his current payroll of 35. Another problem is the fact that entreprenuers are willing to pay almost triple the rent that Hindy would, which is ironic because the brewery is largely credited for helping make the area attractive to incoming businesses. Leah Archibald, the executive director of the East Williamsburg Valley Industrial Development Corporation has said that her organization would do what it takes to keep the beer makers in Brooklyn, but HIndy and his people still feel mis-treated.

Forbes Loves To Tour New York Breweries

Forbes has rated Brooklyn Brewery and Brewery Ommeganag as two of the top 10 breweries to tour in the country. The article says these breweries were chosen "for a variety of not-exactly-scientific factors: the overall quality of the beer, the originality of the tour or brewery and their legacies. The growth of the market, and the creativity it has inspired, made it tough to choose." either of these brewery tours makes a great day trip for the beer lover in your family.

Brooklyn Local 1 is Good for You!!!

In search of "the best-tasting, healthiest brews available" Men's Health named Brooklyn Brewery's Local 1 beer the best Bottle Conditioned beer. The article states that "Recent research has revealed bioactive compounds in beer that battle cancer, boost your metabolism, and more". The article claims that the beer's benefits come from the yeast that is added during the bottling process. The yeast is believed to help the digestive and nervous systems as well as blood-sugar levels. In addition to Local 1, several other New York beers were mentioned. Southern Tier's Unearthly IPA, He' Brew's Origin Pomegranate Ale, Southampton's Grand Cru and Ommegang's Hennepin were all mentioned as healthier beers.
