Any fan of craft beer in New York City has probably seen the "Good Beer Seal" sticker. On Tuesday June 14th, seven beer bars were inducted to the 2011 Class of The Good Beer Seal. The following bars were honored:
4th Avenue Pub (76 4th Ave., at Bergen St., Boerum Hill)
Bierkraft (191 Fifth Ave., at President St., Park Slope)
Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., at Franklin St., Greenpoint)
The Double Windsor (210 Prospect Park West, at 16th St., Windsor Terrace)
Mission Dolores (249 4th Ave., at Carroll St., Park Slope)
The Stag’s Head (252 E. 51st St., at 2nd Ave., Turtle Bay)
Waterfront Ale House (540 2nd Ave., at 30th St., Kips Bay)
The Seal is given to bars that serve "good beer" and was developed when Garry Gillis of the Burp Castle and Standings, Ray Deter of DBA and DBA Williamsburg, and Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 joined together in attempt to certify bars that served good beer.
According to the Good Beer Seal website, there are five criteria for receiving a Good Beer Seal.
1) Have 80% craft domestic or special imported beers
2) Serve a good portion of their beers via a draft beer and/or cask ale program
3) Maintain a strong “Pub” vibe as a nice, local place to drink a beer and visit with friends
4) Active community presence, as well as being an independently operated establishment
5) Good beer should be a strong feature, if not THE FOCUS of the operation
