Ommegang’s Latest Game of Thrones® Beer Has a Name – Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) After an exciting season that saw the Starks reclaim the North and Cersei take the Iron Throne as the first queen of Westeros, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are introducing a new beer and bringing back a previous brew to steady the nerves of fans as they anxiously endure the show’s off-season break. Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is the latest beer in the series and pays homage to Arya’s season-long struggles within and around the House of Black and White. This beer will be available in 750ml single bottles, on draft and also paired alongside its previously released sister-brew Valar Morghulis in a collectible gift pack which features a commemorative glass as well. Suggested retail price is $9.99 for the individual bottles and $22.99 for the gift pack. The official nationwide release to retailers is October 10.
Fans of Game of Thrones know that “Valar Morghulis” means “All Men Must Die” in High Valyrian and is traditionally answered with the phrase “Valar Dohaeris,” which means “All Men Must Serve.” Label art for both bottles features the two-headed coin, given to Arya Stark by Jaqen H’ghar, which gained her passage to Braavos at the end of Season 5. Arya spent most of Season 6 in Braavos training to become a faceless assassin, making the naming of the latest beer and the decision to re-release Valar Morghulis a no-brainer.
“When we got a sense of the season’s key plot points, we knew right away Valar Dohaeris was the new beer name and that bringing back Valar Morghulis was a must,” says Bill Wetmore, General Manager and Marketing Director for Brewery Ommegang. “And I think HBO’s fantastic idea to have the gift pack mimic the House of Black and White is really going to be a hit with fans. It looks killer and I think fans are going to scoop them up pretty quickly for gifts or for their own collections.”
“Of the classic Belgian styles, the dubbel and the tripel are two of our favorites to brew, and both are styles we’re particularly well known for,” says Ommegang Brewmaster Phil Leinhart. “I love the idea of releasing them together side-by-side. It is such a great way to experience them.  They are also pretty hearty and should age nicely over time, so fans can stock up to last them through the winter and to fill the void until next season.”
Originally released in 2014, Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale is a name and style selected by fans in a December 2013 social media poll. One of the fastest-selling beers in the series, fans enjoyed this classic Belgian-style because it is fairly complex and full of intrigue – much like the show itself. Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is, much like a “faceless man,” not what it first appears to be; it shares the complexity of its sister-brew and a strength masked and belied by its lighter color.
Valar Morghulis is 8% ABV, brewed with pilsner and specialty malts and hopped with Apollo and Hallertau Spalt Select hops. The hue is deep amber-brown and aromas include caramel, toffee, ripe fruit, banana and slightly burnt sugar. The taste is well-balanced with rich malty sweetness, caramel and sugar, and just a touch of bitterness to balance. The finish is surprisingly dry and light on the tongue, a surprising counter to its aroma and initial taste.
Valar Dohaeris is 9% ABV, brewed with pils, wheat and oats, flaked barley, and hopped with noble hops. It pours a beautiful copper-tinted hue with a full, fluffy white head. Sweet grain and honey are prevalent in the aroma. The flavor opens with a bright sweetness thanks to the Belgian candi sugar used in brewing. The finish is moderately dry and effervescent with just a hint of Belgian yeast character.

Sixth Ommegang Game of Thrones Beer Is On Its Way

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) Seven Hells! Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat Ale, the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series from HBO Global Licensing and Brewery Ommegang, is slated to debut this spring ahead of the premiere of season six of HBO’s critically-acclaimed and Emmy award-winning show. The brew will be available all throughout the realm – the United States that is – both on draft and in large-format 750ml bottles.

Seven Kingdoms is a marriage of a traditional Belgian-style wheat and a hop-forward American ale – but unlike so many of the marriages on the show, the resulting hoppy wheat is pleasant, playful and inspired. At 6.9% ABV, it possesses a nuanced complexity that pairs nicely with the hop-forward characteristics that make it surprisingly refreshing.

“We love bringing as much inspiration, thoughtfulness and creativity to the Game of Thrones beers as we can,” said Mike McManus, Innovation Manger at Brewery Ommegang. “This last season, the imaginativeness of the show was pretty astounding so we aimed for a beer that could hope to match that. A fusion of two wonderful styles was an idea that really excited our team.”

“With Seven Kingdoms, Ommegang has crafted another excellent brew which we know our fans will love,” said Josh Goodstadt, Vice President of Global Licensing at HBO. “The world of Westeros is varied and complex and this varietal embodies those characteristics while offering a new and unique taste to beer drinkers.”

Seven Kingdoms pours a hazy pale yellow with a thick cap of pure white foam. The aroma is floral, citrusy with a touch of passion fruit and a slightly herbal hop aroma underpinned with yeast notes of banana, ripe fruit, and spicy phenols. The taste is a full, round hop flavor with tart orange and lemon with a substantial wheat maltiness and the finish has slightly lingering hop notes without being harshly bitter. The mouthfeel is smooth and silken owing to the wheat and oats.

The new brew is hopped with Bravo, Centennial, Citra, Cascade, and Columbus, and brewed with pilsner, white and red wheat, oats, and a touch of sugar to lighten the body. Ommegang’s unique house yeast is used in both primary fermentation and bottling conditioning.

Seven Kingdoms follows the re-release of the first two Game of Thrones-inspired beers, Iron Throne Blonde Ale and Take the Black Stout (fall 2015 and spring/fall 2013), Three-Eyed Raven Dark Saison (spring 2015), Valar Morghulis (fall 2014), and Fire and Blood Red Ale (spring 2014). Due to the popularity of this series of beers, Seven Kingdoms will be brewed at 3.5 times the volume of the first beer released in spring 2013. It will be available nationally in March 2016 on draft and in 750ml bottles for the suggested retail price $9.99 per bottle.

Ommegang Releases Game of Thrones Gift Pack

Mother’s Mercy – Iron Throne Blonde Ale and Take the Black Stout to return this fall
HBO® and Brewery Ommegang to re-release first two beers in popular Game of Thrones® collaboration

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) While in Westeros it remains very much uncertain who will ultimately rule the Seven Kingdoms, fans of Brewery Ommegang and the hit HBO show Game of Thrones are going to enjoy something not seen since the merry rule of King Joffrey – Iron Throne Blonde Ale and Take the Black Stout. The two first brews in the collaboration series, much like Jorah Mormont, are back just when fans thought they were gone forever. Both beers will be re-released this fall on draft, in single 750ml bottles and in a first-ever collectible gift pack featuring a bottle of each and a commemorative Game of Thrones glass.
“We heard from so many fans who were disappointed about missing the first two Game of Thrones beers,” said Josh Goodstadt, Vice President of Global Licensing at HBO. “The popularity of the beers has grown right alongside the popularity of the show, and we are thrilled to give these first two brews a second turn in the spotlight.”

When it was originally released in 2013, Iron Throne Blonde Ale was brewed at only 25% of the volume of the most recent beer, Three-Eyed Raven, which hit stores this spring timed to Season 5 of the show. Bottle shops across the country sold out in days, while bars poured through kegs in hours. Take the Black Stout was brewed at twice the volume of Iron Throne and still sold out quickly. Fans who missed out on both of these popular brews, and those who can’t wait to try them again, will finally have a chance this fall.
“We had no idea what the reaction to a Game of Thrones beer would be when this all started,” said Bill Wetmore, Marketing Director for Brewery Ommegang.  “We were blown away by the runaway success of these first two beers and are very excited to give loyal fans another chance to enjoy them.”

Iron Throne Blonde Ale has a slightly hazy golden amber hue. The head is full and fluffy. The finish is crisp, backed by a touch of spice and hops. The aroma is a bit grassy with a hint of lemon fruitiness from the lemon peel. The taste is lightly malty, rounded by honey malt sweetness. Iron Throne Blonde Ale is 6.5% ABV.

Take the Black Stout is deep black in hue, with a full tan head. Aromas include dark chocolate, caramel malt, earthy hops, and a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, dark coffee, and rich malt character. The beer has light, balanced roastiness aroma and taste. The clean hop bitterness converges with a slight woody character and spiciness. The finish offers sweet malt character giving way to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness. Take the Black Stout is 7.0% ABV.

The two beers will be available nationally in late September on draft, in 750ml bottles, and also in limited edition gift packs featuring a bottle of each beer plus a newly designed glass featuring the Ommegang and Game of Thrones logos in gold. Suggested retail price for the individual bottles is $9.99 and $22.99 for the gift pack.

2014 Edition of Belgium Comes To Cooperstown Will Have Las Vegas Theme

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) This August, what happens in Cooperstown, stays in Cooperstown.  That’s because “Belgium Comes to Cooperstown,” Brewery Ommegang’s beer, music, food, and all-things-fun fest is returning August 8 and 9 with a “Sin City” theme.  The annual festival offers beer enthusiasts the opportunity to taste hard-to-find Belgian ales from the Motherland and Belgian-style ales from all over North America – and this year a chance to do so dressed in a white Elvis jumpsuit. Tickets, which typically go faster than a stack of $20s at a cold black-jack table, go on sale to the public April 1.

This year’s Las Vegas theme will pervade the festival while more than 100 breweries will be on hand pouring more than 300 unique beers for the 3,000 attendees. In addition to great beer, BCTC promises gourmet food vendors, live music, on-site camping, fireworks, and much more.  Winning chefs from Ommegang’s national HopChef competition will go head to head on Saturday vying for top honors in food and beer pairing. And, for true Vegas high-rollers (well, VIP ticketholders and those lucky enough to get one of 300 limited ticket upgrades), a Game of Thrones experience will be available in recognition of Ommegang’s one-of-a-kind promotional partnership with the hit HBO series. Guests for this will receive a bottle of the soon-to-be-announced, and yet to be released fourth beer in Ommegang’s collaborative beer series, a commemorative glass and a photo opportunity on a replica of the Iron Throne from the show. Tickets for the upgrade are $25.

“We’ve been talking about a Las Vegas-theme for several years now and it only made sense because with so much great music and activities, plus a field full of beer-loving campers, BCTC is the festival that never sleeps,” said Tara Aitchison, Retails and Events Manager at Brewery Ommegang. “We are filling the weekend with several fun surprises so that just like Vegas, you never know where the night will take you but you are certain it will be fantastically memorable.  For this weekend at least, the “entertainment capital of the world” isn’t a dusty desert light-show, but an idyllic and quaint lakeside village in Upstate NY.”

Festivities begin on Friday at 6pm with a five-course beer-pairing dinner for VIP ticket holders.  The festival grounds open at noon on Saturday for patrons holding camping tickets.  Tastings begin at 2:30 pm for VIP ticket holders and 3 pm for general admission.  Tastings end at 7 pm.  There will be live music from 3 pm until midnight. On Sunday morning, breakfast will be served from 8 am until noon. The brewery will be closed to the public on Friday and Saturday, August 8 and 9, but will reopen for regular service on Sunday, August 10.

VIP tickets cost $250 and include the five-course beer pairing dinner, two nights of camping on the brewery grounds, and additional access to the beer tasting on Saturday afternoon. General admission tickets for Saturday’s tasting event cost $90 and general admission with camping on Saturday night costs $110. Guests may add the Game of Thrones package to their GA and GA+camping tickets for $25. The Game of Thrones experience is included in the costs of a VIP ticket.

Tickets go on sale April 1 at noon at Ommegang.com and Etix.com and are available until they sell out.  Please note that VIP tickets have sold out in under a minute for the last three years and all tickets sell out within a day of the event going on sale.  For more information, email events@ommegang.com or call (607) 544-1800 ext. 813.

Ommegang Announces Third Game of Thrones Beer at GABF

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) The hottest news coming out of the Great American Beer Festival’s first session on Thursday, October 10 was the announcement of the third beer in the Game of Thrones-inspired series from Brewery Ommegang and HBO.  Fire and Blood Red Ale, inspired by House Targaryen, follows Iron Throne Blonde Ale (Spring 2013) and Take the Black Stout (available now).  While the beer won’t be released until Spring 2014, a sneak peak of artwork incorporated in the label was revealed and will feature the three Targaryen dragons: Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion (see attached photo).
Unlike any other collaboration in beer realm history, Ommegang and HBO are creating smash hit after smash hit with this series.  Iron Throne Blonde Ale set an Ommegang sales record as their fastest selling limited edition beer to date. Take the Black Stout is breaking that record and the third GoT-inspired brew is sure to take it a step further.

Brewery Ommegang Releases Second Game of Thrones Beer

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) Night gathers, and it's time to unveil the second Game of Thrones beer. From Brewery Ommegang and HBO comes the highly-anticipated Take the Black Stout, inspired by the Night’s Watch and the men who stand it. The label features the sacred Weirwood tree, where men such as Jon Snow — who worship the old gods — take the Night's Watch oath.

Take the Black Stout inherits the mantle of the wildly successful Iron Throne Ale, which arrived earlier this year and had beer lovers, retailers, and wholesalers clamoring for more. Bottle shops and grocery stores across the country sold out in days, while bars poured through kegs in hours. To quench the Tyrion-sized thirst of beer-drinking Game of Thrones fans, Ommegang will more than double the volume of the Iron Throne releaseTake the Black Stout will debut this fall through Ommegang’s nationwide distribution network.

Mike McManus, Ommegang’s Innovation Manager, developed the beer with wintery thoughts and dark tidings in mind. “I imagined Take the Black Stout as a hearty and robust beer to fortify those heroically standing watch at the Wall,” said McManus. “Like their lives, the beer is dark, complex and bold.  The maltiness offers deeper complexity than traditional stout; the brew also boasts more alcohol at 7% ABV, more body and more hops than typical stout offerings.   Spicing with star anise and licorice root - imbues deeper flavors and an enticing aroma. I’d like to think it would offer comfort to those upholding their vows at the Wall.”

Tasting notes for Take the Black Stout:

Take the Black Stout is brewed with base malts, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. It’s hopped with Northern Brewer hops and spiced with licorice root and star anise.

The hue is deep black, almost opaque, with a full tan head. Aromas include dark chocolate, caramel malt, and earthy hops, with light roastiness, and a touch of fruitiness.

Taste includes chocolate, dark coffee, rich malt character, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness converges with a slight woody character and spiciness.

The finish offers a sweet malt character giving way to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

Take the Black Stout will be available on draft and in 750ml corked bottles. A new custom glass, designed especially for the beer, will also be available.

Further details regarding Take the Black Stout will be revealed  later this summer.
