2013 TAP-NY Preview

It is almost that time again.  TAP-NY is the biggest festival in New York State and has turned into a yearly holiday for us at TheFoamingHead.

We attended our first TAP-NY in 2007 and have come back for both sessions each year since.  We published our first preview in 2009, and covered the event with a two part live blog covering Saturday and Sunday.  After a break in 2010 we came back with both preview and recaps in 2011 and 2012. (2011 and 2012 previews and 2011 and 2012 recaps).

The 2013 edition of TAP-NY shows continued growth with 93 breweries receiving invitations to pour their beers and compete for the following awards:

The Matthew Vassar Brewers' Cup
The Vassar Cup is awarded to the best brewery in the Hudson Valley.  The top three beers in the Hudson Valley are also awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals under this category.   Chatham Brewing Company took home last year's Vassar Cup with Lake Placid's KB's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale taking home the Gold medal, Captain Lawrence's Imperial IPA taking home the Silver, and High Point's Ramstein Double Platinum Blonde taking home the Bronze.

The F.X. Matt Memorial Cup
The F.X. Matt Cup is awarded to the best brewery in New York State. As with The Vassar Cup, the top three breweries in this category also receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals under this category.  In a new twist this year, the beer receiving the Gold medal for best beer in New York State will also be awarded The Governor's Cup.  The award was named after Governor Cuomo in recognition of his continued efforts to promote craft beer in New York State.  Spider Bite Brewing was named the best brewery in New York at last year's festival with Bandwagon's High Step Hefeweizen winning the Gold medal, Captain Lawrence's Imperial IPA winning the Silver, and Horseheads' Chocolate Porter winning the Bronze.

The John Calen Memorial Award
The John Calen award is named after one of the founders of TAP-NY.  Created in 2011 to honor his passing, the event's organizers choose a different style of beer each year and give the award to the best beer in that style.  The inagural award honored English-Style Pale Ales and last year's award recognized Porters.

*Speaking of medals,  Captain Lawence Captain's Reserve might as well be the official beer of TAP-NY.  We said it last year in our recap and it is worth repeating.  In 2006, the Double IPA won both the Vassar and Matt gold medal. In 2007 it captured the Vassar Silver. In 2009 it won the Vassar gold. In 2010 it took both the Vassar and Matt Silver. This year it again took both the Vassar and Matt Silver medals. Seven years, eight medals for the beer that we scored 96 points and have ranked as the best beer in New York State (out of over 400 we have tasted.)

*There has also been a recent trend of new breweries winning one of the cups.  We caught onto this trend last year and predicted that Newburgh Brewing would win one of the titles.  As with most of our predicitons we were wrong and it was Spider Bite who ended up being the new brewery who impressed.

*Who are the first time invitees this year?  Andean Brewing Co.mpany, The Beer Diviner, Birdland Brewing, Blind Bat Brewing, Bridge & Tunnel Brewery, Community Beer Works, Council Rock Brewery, Druthers Brewing Company, Brewery at Dutch Ale House, Eataly, 508 Gastrobrewery, Good Nature Brewing Company, Gordon Biersch, Honey Hollow Brewery, Naked Dove Brewing, Naked Flock Hard Cider, Rushing Duck Brewing, Single Cut Beersmiths, Sloop Brewing Company, and Yonkers Brewing Company.  We have not received the final list of which breweries have committed to attending so it makes our prediciton even harder.  If the trend of new kids on the block taking home a trophy continues, mark us down for Rushing Duck (Sorry for the jinx).

*The Bronx Brewery has been in the news a lot lately with their plans to open their own facility as well as the recent release of their flagship pale ale in cans.  Their subsequent releases have been different versions of their classic pale, with rye, Belgian, and black versions.  Let's hope they bring all four.

*We just reviewed Captain Lawrence's Sun Block wheat beer.  One of the best seasonal beers we have had in a long time, we will have more than a few pours of this beer if the temperature heats up this weekend.

*Cave Mountain may be small but they are constantly keeping things interesting.  Past TAP-NY pours have included a Hemp Seed Ale, and an IPA that checked in at 400 IBU's. What do they have in store for this year?

*After winning last year's Vassar Cup, the boys from Chatham Brewing reveled in their glory.  They also gave me quite a bit of grief for not even mentioning them in our annual preview.  I was able to take a trip up the Interstate to visit them and check out the space for their new brewery.  Head brewer Matt Perry does a phenominal job with the limited space he is currently brewing in and I can't wait to see what he produces once he gets into the new space.

*Not sure if they are coming (Buffalo is a long ways away), but I have heard nothing but good things from people I trust about Community Beer Works.  Let's hope the small brewery brings some of their beer for the Hudson Valley to taste.

*Druthers Brewing will impress at their first TAP-NY.  Head brewer George DePiro is the former brewer of the Albany Pump Station/C.H. Evans Ale where he was responsible for brewing the multiple time GABF winner Kick Ass Brown Ale.

*Eataly and 508 Gastrobrewery have been receiving a lot of press lately.  The two New York Ciity brewpubs have been invited but I have not confirmed their attendance.  Eataly is the joint venture that counts Dogfish Head's Sam Caligione as one of its co-founders.  My collegue and I finally got down to taste some of their beers and they were well brewed and unique at the same time.  508 Gastrobrewery has gaining notorioty after longtime New York beer guru Chris Cuzme took over the reins as head brewer.

*F.X. Matt Brewing has always suffered an undeserved stigma among craft beer "nerds/geeks/snobs" as a "gateway" brewery.  Cliche terms aside I have been very impressed with Saranac's recent expansion of their High Peaks Series.  Hopefully they will be pouring any one or multiple offerings from this series.

*Just got a chance to taste our first Long Ireland beer.  Their Pale Ale scored an impressive 93 points.  That is all.

*Peekskill is all moved into their new facility and head brewer Jeff O'Neill has been cranking out impressive beer after impressive beer.  I was able to taste his Simple Sour and it was another incredible sour ale (remember Jeff was the one who brewed Brute during his time at Ithaca).  I have heard that his Amazeballs beer is even better and has now created a Triple IPA to follow in the footsteps of his Eastern Standard and Double Standard.

*We named Rushing Duck as our pick to take home an award and for good reason.  The new Orange County brewery is just a few miles down the road from TheFoamingHead headquarters and we couldn't be happier.  We haven't tasted a bad beer from them and most have them have been very good.  Consider this RD's coming out party.

*Sloop Brewing is the new local nanobrewery in the Hudson Valley.  We were able to taste their Red C on cask at the Aroma Thyme/Keegan Ales Hudson Valley Beer & Cheese Festival and loved it.

*Applewood Winery has created their own line of apple ciders and has named it Naked Flock Hard Cider.  They just brewed a cider with hops which I have not had the chance to taste but their pumpkin apple cider was really enjoyable.  I am looking forward to tasting a few more of Naked Flock's varities of cider.

Below is a complete list of the breweries invited.

2012 TAP-NY Preview

The annual TAP-NY festival is set to kick off on Saturday and the biggest beer festival in New York is expected to get even bigger this year. The sixteenth edition of the festival will hand out the F.X. Matt Memorial Cup and Matthew Vassar Brewers' Cup for the best brewery in New York State and the Hudson Valley as well as the John Calen Memorial Award. Calen was a founding member of the festival and passed away last year. An award was created in his name to crown the best beer in a pre-selected style. This year's award will be handed out to the best porter beer at the festival.

With the event just days away, it is time to release our annual TAP-NY preview.  Our final count has 46 breweries pouring 183 beers. TheFoamingHead has tasted and reviewed over a third of the beers that will be poured and have included the links to these reviews.  (Editor's Note: The people at TAP-NY have a count of over 200 beers being poured for the first time in the event's history this year.)

Here are the things that TheFoamingHead will be on the look out for at TAP-NY:

* There will be nine new breweries making their TAP-NY debut. Bacchus Brewing Company, Finger Lakes Beer Company, Jonas Bronck's Beer Company, Keuka Brewing Company, Newburgh Brewing Company, Port Jeff Brewing Company, Roc Brewing Company, Spider Bite Beer Company, and The Bronx Brewery.

I have not had the chance to taste many of the beers from the first time pourers.  While I look forward to all of them, The Bronx Brewery Pale Ale has been receiving all sorts of rave reviews out of beer geeks in NYC.

* It will be interesting to see what Barrier brings to defend its F.X. Matt title from last year. Ditto for Crossroads and their Vassar Cup. The bar is open in Athens with the restaurant coming very soon. With head brewer Hutch Kugeman (one of ym favorites) at the helm, the beer will always be good.

* I was able to attend the Brooklyn Brewery release party for their new Brewmaster's Reserve beer, Gold Standard. It is a great beer that fills a need for the lager style. This is a must try.

* The Brown's Whiskey Porter is one of the best beers in NY when it is brewed fresh.  It usually is for this event.

* Cave Mountain brought a 400 IBU bomb to last year's event. This years head-turner? Hemp Seed IPA.

* Custom Brewcrafters makes some incredible beer from the Rochester area, yet few from downstate know much about it. Consider TAP their coming out party.

* The IPA from Empire Brewing Company is one of the highest rated beers on TheFoamingHead.

* Mrs. FoamingHead will be upset to see that brewer Ed Samchisen decided to leave his Hot-Jala-Heim pepper beer behind. It is her favorite part of the festival every year. Regardless, there will be some great beer from the underappreciated brewery.

* It is hard to find any of the beers from Long Ireland in the Hudson Valley so this might be a rare opportunity to taste through their offerings.

* We mentioned them before but the Newburgh Brewing Company will make i's grand entrance to the NY craft beer world. (The company released their beers this weekend but with an expected 6,000 attendees this will be their big introduction.) A short ride from Hunter, we think this might be the one of the most talked about breweries of the weekend.  Also, newer breweries have taken three of the last four cups awarded so don't be surprised if Newburgh (or one of the other newbies) takes home a cup.

* This will be the first TAP festival for the Jeff O' Neill as the brewmaster of Peekskill. The "Chief", who previosuly brewed at Ithaca, is considered one of the best brewers in the state. His first brews at his new job were very impressive.  Here is my pick for a medal, a cup, or a combination of both.

* Southern Tier is considered by quite a few to be the best brewery in NY. They have put their back burner (91 points for the original) in oak and will be pouring the new version.

* Like Custom Brewcrafters, Three Heads can get overlooked because of their location.  An unknown who greatly impressed the masses last year, their new Common Man Specal Lager will be worth seeking out.

*Seriously, the rave reviews about Bronx Pale Ale have been coming in waves. This might be the first beer tasted by TheFoamingHead.

Adirondack Brewery Introduces New Packaging

Lake George, NY (May 2011) -- Just in time for the Lake George summer tourist season, the Adirondack Brewery has just released new packaging for its bottled beers and beer cases – eight new labels, each celebrating the iconic legends and tales of the Adirondack Region. Tourists visiting the region will now have the opportunity to drink the finest ale brewed and bottled right in Lake George Village while learning about the great legends that have made Lake George the “Queen of American Lakes.”

From the award-winning summer favorite, Dirty Blonde Ale that highlights the tales of summer romance on the shores of Lake George to the light-bodied lager to the history behind the Iroquois Pale Ale, each craft brew uniquely unleashes the spirit of the Adirondacks.

The concept and design of the new labels is the brainchild of Linda Wohlers, who has a vast knowledge about the history of the Adirondack region. “I wanted to create labels that not only caught the consumers eye, but also told a unique story that was symbolic of the Adirondack region,” states Linda. Each beer label and packaging of the six-packs and cases not only tells a story but also promotes the entire region by offering a brief history and introduction to the Adirondacks,” she furthers.

Below is an explanation of a sampling of the new labels:

Dirty Blonde Ale – Recently named “3rd Best Craft Beer in the Hudson Valley” by TAP NY, Dirty Blonde Ale is an all-American wheat beer with a twist of grapefruit, making this brew light, refreshing and perfect for drinking in the summer. The new label for Dirty Blonde Ale is an ode to the many summer romances that have taken place on the shores of Lake George since the early 1800’s and showcases a voluptuous longhaired dirty blonde lounging on the shores of Lake George.

A majestic, crystal clear lake, Lake George has attracted thousands of tourists and second-home owners each summer season. Bringing together downstaters, upstaters and out-of staters, Lake George village becomes a haven for the young, beautiful and the restless, all sharing the same love of good ole’ Lake George. These crowds bring hundreds of bright-eyed young ladies and eager gentlemen who are antsy to fall in love and set their sails free, for a summer of romance. View the label here.

Iroquois Pale Ale – A big American style India Pale Ale (IPA) with a deep orange color, and crisp citrus aroma, Adirondack Brewery’s Iroquois Pale Ale is dedicated to the Iroquois Nation – a powerful force that controlled most of the northeast United States and Canada abut made the land spanning from the Adirondacks to Niagara Falls, their homeland and their hunting grounds. The word "Adirondack" actually means "those who eat trees" in the language of the Iroquois.

During the early 1600’s the Europeans set foot on the region and soon encountered the Iroquois. A small fight began and the Iroquois people witnessed the French settlers shoot and kill two of their Chiefs; thus sparking the hatred of the French by the Iroquois, which eventually lead to an alliance between the British and the Iroquois. The Iroquois Nation was fierce, loyal, and fought alongside the British during the French and Indian War, which positioned the British as the dominant colonial power in the eastern half of North America. The Iroquois Nation to this day has an immense cultural influence amongst the land and the people in the Adirondack region.

Iroquois Pale Ale is dedicated to the powerful and peaceful Iroquois Nation. View the label here.

Fat Scotsman Ale – This big rich and malty Scottish ale is a tribute to Lockhart Mountain in Lake George, which was homestead for the Scottish Lockhart Clan who emigrated from Scotland to Lake George region in the early 1800's, where they settled on what would soon be called Lockhart Mountain. During the French and Indian War, members of the clan served as soldiers in the Scottish Regiments who fought alongside the British and the Iroquois. As history tells us, the Iroquois viewed the British as “wimps” and the Scots as fierce, proud, warriors who never backed down from a rowdy brawl! The Lockhart clan was rewarded from their service in the French & Indian War with a grant of land included all lakefront land on Route 9L north to Dunham's Bay on the water, and over the Mountain to Route 149.

Fat Scotsman Ale is a tribute to the bold Lockhart Clan ad their proud Scottish traditions. View the label here.

Headwater Hefe Beer – Headwater Hefe is Adirondack Brewery’s authentic Bavarian style Hefeweizen. Imported Malts and an Authentic German yeast strain give this lightly hopped wheat beer a refreshing flavor with hints of banana and clove in the finish.

Dedicated to Hudson River, a true symbol of New York State whose 315 miles of shoreline connects the largest state park in the country to the largest city in the country, Headwater Hefe Beer celebrates the origin of the Hudson River, which starts from the southwest slope of the tallest mountain in the New York, Mt. Marcy. At an elevation of a steep 4,293 feet lies Lake Tear of the Cloud, is a small tarn located in the town of Keene, in Essex County. It is both the highest lake in the state and the highest source of the Hudson River. We dedicate this beer to the river that links upstate to downstate, and urbanites to country folks, in one proud connection. View the label here.
