About Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah:
In his small business memoir, Jeremy Cowan divulges how he took on the craft beer world and ultimately created one of the most respected niche brands in the country. Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah tracks Cowan's evolution from the earliest days of hand squeezing pomegranates and delivering 100 cases of hand-bottled HE'BREW Beer® to winning awards 13 years later at top U.S. craft beer festivals. This meaningful, insightful and often hilarious memoir takes readers on a wild ride with the head of today's most successful and decorated Jewish Celebration Freak Show Craft Brewery.

To co-write and edit the tale of Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah, Cowan enlisted the help of longtime friend and professional journalist, James Sullivan. Sullivan worked as a staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and contributor to the Boston Globe. He is the author of three books: 7 Dirty Words: The Life and Crimes of George Carlin, The Hardest Working Man: How James Brown Saved the Soul of America, and Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon. Cowan entrusted Sullivan to help capture the intimate, purposefully conversational style of his story and to transform his writing from beer labels and sell sheets into a 300 plus page narrative.

On working with Cowan, James Sullivan assesses, "Jeremy puts all sorts of ingredients into his delicious beers, but the first one is always chutzpah. He sold the first cases of HE'BREW out of the trunk of his grandma's Volvo, and now it's available across the country. Same with Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah -- he self-published, and now he's got national distribution. Beer, perseverance and comedy: a very sessionable recipe."

A standout success story in the beer world, Shmaltz Brewing features two lines, HE'BREW Beer® and Coney Island Craft Lagers®, that have gained a dedicated cult following. A renowned contract brewer, Jeremy Cowan has developed Shmaltz into a nearly $3 million a year business with more than 10 employees. The brand has been highlighted with many distinguished media outlets including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, NPR "Weekend Edition," The Onion, and Beer Advocate Magazine. Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah captures the heart and soul of a visionary small business owner dedicated to producing exceptional handcrafted products, and turning on the average consumer to the delicious world of craft beer.

Local vendors and restaurants will set up shop to showcase food items, vintage accessories, handcrafted jewelry, landscape photography, sculpture and knitwear. In addition, family friendly activities such as pumpkin decorating, face painting and a bounce castle will be avaialble with a suggested donation fee of $5. Proceeds of the kids activities and games will be donated to a local charity.

Greenport Harbor and Blue Point Win Applebees Contest at North Fork Craft Beer, BBQ & Wine Festival

BAY SHORE, NY. - Attendees at the 5th Annual North Fork Craft Beer, BBQ & Wine Festival held at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead, NY on August 13, 2011 were asked to vote for their favorite beer of the festival as part of the Applebee's favorite beer contest. The two beers that received the highest number of votes will be offered on draught at Applebee's locations on Long Island, one in Nassau County, one in Suffolk County.

"It it was wonderful to see how excited the festival attendees were to cast their vote for their favorite craft beer," said Marc Prince, Director of Operations for Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar/Doherty Enterprise. "We run the voting to give our guests who enjoy craft beers a say in what we serve in our restaurants. We want to offer them choices. For our guests, this is a way for them to let us know what they want," added Prince.

With a sold out crowd in attendance yielding nearly 1100 votes, the attendees selected two seasonal beers as the most popular at the festival: the Pumpkin Ale from the Blue Point Brewing Company (Patchogue, NY) and the Leaf Pile Ale from Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (Greenport, NY). "Talk about a hometown advantage," said Andy Calimano, event producer and owner of Starfish Junction. "These Long Island breweries make amazing beers, and the locals really recognize that." Blue Point Brewing Company's Pumpkin Ale will take over a tap line at all the Nassau County Applebee's restaurants, and Greenport Harbor's Leaf Pile Ale will be available at more than 14 Applebee's locations in Suffolk County, starting at the end of September.

Blue Point's Pumpkin Ale is golden orange, crisp and delicious, with an innocent hint of cinnamon and nutmeg that articulates the fall season. The limited availability of this seasonal beer makes it highly desirable. Just like the leaves, it's gone after Thanksgiving. Leaf Pile Ale is "like a slice of pumpkin pie in a glass," says DJ Swanson, brewer at the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. "Fresh whole ginger, cinnamon, all spice, and nutmeg gives this ale its distinct character," he explained.

Executives from Applebee's work with event producer Starfish Junction to conduct three fan favorite voting platforms per year, one in the spring at the Spring Craft Beer Festival (www.SpringCraftBeerFestival.com) held in March at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY; at the award-winning North Fork Craft Beer, BBQ & Wine Festival (www.NorthForkCraftBeerFest.com) held every August at Martha Clara Vineyards in Jamesport, NY.; and every fall at the fun-filled International Great Beer Expo (www.GreatBeerExpo.com/Nassau) held each November at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. Previous winners have included Fire Island Beer Co. (NY), Brooklyn Brewery (NY), Magic Hat Brewery (VT), and Blue Point Brewing Company (NY). To find an Applebee's location near you, visit www.Applebees.com.

Shmaltz and Terrapin Team Up To Release Reunion '11

SHMALTZ BREWING & TERRAPIN BEER PRESENT:

Reunion Ale '11: A Beer For Hope

Dark Imperial Brown Ale Brewed with Cocoa Nibs, Vanilla and Chili Peppers

Proceeds Benefiting the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research

New York, NY - Teaming up as a brewing partner with Terrapin Beer Company and Alan Shapiro of SBS Imports, Shmaltz Brewing is proud to participate for the first time in creating Reunion Ale '11: A Beer for Hope®. Now in its fifth year of production, Reunion® is brewed annually in memory of Virginia MacLean, a dear friend of Alan Shapiro (founder of SBS Imports) and Pete Slosberg's (creator of Pete's Wicked Ale) and a dedicated cancer research supporter who lost her own battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research, and a portion of the proceeds from Reunion Ale '11® is donated directly to the IMBCR. Reunion Ale '11® is now available in 22 oz bottles and a limited amount of draft in the nearly 40 U.S. states that receive distribution from Terrapin and Shmaltz, and in Western Canada through Shmaltz's distribution network. National fundraising events will occur throughout the fall and winter. Please see the line-up of upcoming events listed below.

Inspired by a delicious dessert at MacLean's favorite restaurant, Reunion Ale '11® is a dark, Imperial Brown Ale brewed with vanilla, chili peppers, and cocoa nibs from Nashville, Tennessee's Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company. Brewmasters Spike Buckowski (Terrapin Beer Co.), Pete Slosberg, Paul McErlean (Shmaltz Brewing Co.), and Shmaltz Brewing proprietor Jeremy Cowan designed this year's recipe to combine sweet and spicy aromas with complex malt flavors and decadent vanilla and chocolate overtones. After the initial blissful sips, the chilies build a subtle and satisfying heat in the finish.

Reunion was conceived initially by Shapiro, MacLean and Slosberg - who all met during the early days of Pete's Brewing Company - as a way to increase awareness of myeloma and bone cancer and raise donations for the IMBCR. Although MacLean passed away just four months after the release of Reunion® 2007, the Reunion project has carried on the vision of these three friends, raising more than $130,000 for the IMBCR through bottle and draft sales of Reunion®, retailer fundraising events, and private donations. "Virginia emphasized the importance of continuing our support of IMBCR," Shapiro explains. "She believed wholeheartedly in the work of the Institute and understood the value of bringing hope to others." "Every dollar we raise goes directly to IMBCR to fund research," adds co-founder Pete Slosberg. Beer lovers can also donate money through the Reunion website, the Reunion Facebook page, or the IMBCR website.

Although Reunion Ale '11® is Shmaltz Brewing's first collaboration with Shapiro and Slosberg, Jeremy Cowan's relationship with the two dates back to the San Francisco craft beer scene in the 1990s. "Shmaltz is extremely pleased to join the Reunion family for 2011," says Cowan. "Tzedakah (charity) is one of the core values of Shmaltz Brewing. To be able to work with longtime industry friends on this project makes it even more special for our entire company."

Reunion Ale '11® is one of several exceptional collaboration projects in which Shmaltz will participate in 2011. The next release will be the second edition of Geektoberfest®, a collaborative blend of six barrel-aged beers from New York brewers Shmaltz Brewing, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Ithaca Beer Company. Geektoberfest® is the official beer of NY Craft Beer Week (Sept. 16 - 25, 2011), and will be available on draft at select Beer Week events and participating beer bars in New York City.

National fundraising and featured beer events will commence throughout the fall and winter to raise funds and awareness for the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research.
