Wegmans Releases Beer Pairing Guide

Wegmans is a regional supermarket chain that originated in Rochester, NY. The franchise now has stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. In addition to being one of Fortune's Best 100 Companies to Work For, Wegmans has been committed to offering a wide selection of quality craft beers in their stores.

To supplement their beer offerings, Wegmans has recently released a beer pairing guide. Wegmans Executive Chef Russell Ferguson sat down with Brooklyn Brewery's Garrett Oliver to talk about pairing regional beer and food.

In addition to the beer pairing guide, Wegmans also picked out their favorite New York beers according to style. The beers were supplemented with the ABV, a basic description, Chef Feruson's pairing suggestions, and other delicious beers to try from the same brewery.
Cheers to Wegmans for continuing to introduce their customers to tasty, New York beers!

of all ages (over 21)
HE'BREW BEER TURNS 13!
Shmaltz Brewing Company Launches National Contest Seeking Bar/Bat Mitzvah Photos
For Label of Anniversary Seasonal, JEWBELATION BAR MITZVAH
San Francisco, New York, Beyond! - May 2009 America's smallest, biggest and most award-winning Jewish (and now Sideshow Freak) Beer Company, Shmaltz Brewing celebrates its 13th year of delicious beer and delicious shtick with the special release of JEWBELATION BAR MITZVAH: their 13th Chosen Beer in 13 years of Shmaltz. Brewed with 13 malts, 13 hops and soaring to 13% alc, Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah will be nationally available in 22 oz. bottles and a very limited amount of draft for select bars.
Shmaltz Brewing turns 13 this year, which in Judaism marks the year of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the coming of age for a Jewish boy or girl. Shmaltz embraces this monumental occasion by inviting consumers to submit Bar/Bat Mitzvah photographs for potential inclusion on the label of Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah. The national contest runs from now until July 4, 2009; photos can continue to be submitted until Chanukah 2009 as all images will be posted on the Shmaltz website.
Shmaltz welcomes pictures of all Bar/Bat Mitzvah men and women (21+ only)! Bring on the braces, awkward suits, frizzy hair, '80s-tastic family portraits with Aunt Linda and Uncle Dan... and celebrate the day you became an adult. The "winning" photos in each of these categories will receive a HE'BREW Bar Mitzvah Gift Set and be featured on Shmaltz's website: "Best Hair," "Best Family Photo," "Most Awkward Moment," "Youngest-Looking Adult," "Funniest Shot," "Best-Dressed," "Best Braces," and "Best Dance Moves."
Shmaltz looks forward to laughing with you, not at you... Please send photos with your name, date and location of event to info@shmaltzbrewing.com. If you are on Facebook, join their group "The Jewbelation 13 Project," and check out some photos they've collected, post your picture, and become a fan of Shmaltz Brewing and HE'BREW Beer.
The national launch of Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah will take place at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO from September 24-26, 2009. This winter, HE'BREW will host special Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah parties in New York City and San Francisco, CA. Since its inception in 2004, Shmaltz's Jewbelation series has been touted by critics receiving top accolades including "5 Stars" from Celebrator Beer News, "Best Holiday Beer" by Pacific Brew News, and 2007's Jewbelation Eleven has a score of 97 out of 100 with Ratebeer.com. A recent issue of Beer Advocate (Volume II, Issue VIII) commented, "Today, Jeremy Cowan of Shmaltz Brewing Company is arguably making some of the best contract-brewed beers in America."

Shmaltz Rejewvenator

Rejewvenator

DOPPELBOCK, SHMOPPELBOCK...HE'BREW BEER PITCHED THE YEAST OF MONKS!

Shmaltz Brewing Launches The Second Coming of REJEWVENATOR

Limited Edition, Date-Infused, Harvest to Harvest "Chosen" Seasonal
San Francisco, New York, Beyond! - May 2009 America's smallest, biggest and most award-winning Jewish (and now Sideshow Freak) Beer Company, Shmaltz Brewing kicks-off its 13th year of delicious beer and delicious shtick with the second coming of their annual celebration ale, REJEWVENATOR. HE'BREW Beer's latest installment in their sacred fruit infused line-up, Rejewvenator ferments over 400 gallons of Date juice into a half dopplebock, half Belgian style dubbel hybrid lager/ale - a truly unique brewing performance.
Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: the first in Spring traditionally after the barley harvest and the second, the High Holidays in Fall, mark the creation of the world. Harvest to Harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Rising to 7.8% alc, Rejewvenator will be available nationally in 22 oz. bottles and a very limited amount of draft.
The national launch of Rejewvenator will take place during American Craft Beer Week from May 11-17, 2009 with special events happening in markets all across the country (May 7 @ Mugs Ale House in NYC, May 11 @ Brouwer's Café in Seattle, May 13 @ Mission Beach Cafe in San Francisco and Cambridge Common in Boston; additional events will be listed at www.shmaltzbrewing.com). Rejewvenator 2008 (brewed with Figs) was touted by critics, including All About Beer who highlighted the brew in its "Beer Talk" tasting section and raved, "It's a glorious beer." Oakland Tribune proclaimed, "Don't miss this one!"
The experimental process of brewing Rejewvenator begins with 5 specialty malts and 5 hop varieties blending European tradition with brazenly innovative American craft beer flavor and attitude. The brewers use Lager yeast to start cold, bottom fermentation then let the beer warm and pitch a hybrid Abbey/Trappist Belgian Ale yeast brought in exclusively for this brew. Finally all natural Date concentrate pressed on the first day of California's 2009 harvest gets infused into the fermenter. Rejewvenator then sits and ages for another month before centerfuge filtration and packaging.

Attention Beer Fans

New York State recently passed the Bigger, Better Bottle Bill. One clause in that bill states that anyone who sells bottled products in New York State must have a specific New York only UPC label on that bottle. This part of the bill would be a major headache for many businesses but its main impact would be felt by small, local brewers.

The American Homebrewers Association and the Brewers Association sent out this release on Monday asking all beer fans to call up their local government officials and tell them that this is unacceptable. I have allready called.

May 4, 2009

Dear New York Beer Activist,

At the request of the New York State Brewers Association, we are alerting you to an issue which could dramatically affect your access to the craft beers made by small breweries all across the country.

As you have likely learned, the state of New York recently enacted a requirement that bottled products sold in your state must bear a New York-specific UPC code for bottle deposit and redemption purposes. This requirement will have severe negative impacts on many businesses, including and particularly, small breweries. The cost to produce a state-specific label with a unique UPC and the inventory and shipping challenges that presents, will mean many small breweries will be forced to pull their beers out of the New York market because the cost of doing business in the state will be simply too high. And just think of the precedent this potentially sets for other states should they enact similar requirements...small brewer out-of-state sales could be decimated coast to coast.

Several brewing companies have already weighed in on this issue with the Governor, explaining they would have no choice but to discontinue distribution of their beers. This is bad for the state of New York, bad for small brewers everywhere, and perhaps worst of all for New York residents who are craft beer drinkers. Access to the wide range of beer you currently enjoy will be severely limited in the future should this requirement remain on the books.

Please take a few minutes and call or email your State Senator and Assemblyman. Let them know that you feel the New York-specific UPC is a bad idea for business and a bad idea for Empire State residents who drink craft beer and vote. Ask them to support a repeal of the New York-specific UPC requirement as contained in the recently passed Bottle Bill.

Thanks for standing up for consumer choice and America's small brewers.
